Victor Frankenstein
Dr. Whale
PERSONALITY Generally, Victor isn't a horrible person. He cares about others and wants to help them whenever possible. He's a doctor, and not just because the money happens to be good. He has always been a man who values life, even before coming to Storybrooke. As a scientist in the Land Without Color, he always sought to make a name for himself as someone who could revive the dead- he wanted to be a hero. Unfortunately, that kind heart is coated in a thick layer of smarmy bastard. As Dr. Whale, he is a confident, cocky man unrepentant about slinging around all his bravado. Though also confident and sure of himself in the Land Without Color, the cockiness seems more of a world without magic sort of edition. One that sticks even after the curse is lifted. His attitude is very clear when he comes across a pretty lady- he lays it on THICK to impress women. He knows he's all that and a bag of chips, and he wants other people to know it, too. This makes him somewhat difficult to be around, though he is generally harmless regardless of how much he talks himself up. He just likes to date and dash, never one to commit to a long-term relationship. This could be partly because of his concerns about how everyone close to him ends up dead, though it's more likely just because he's a smug sonofabitch and can't see himself tied down to just one girl. He can be very demanding when he wants to be, used to giving orders while in control of his experiments. He doesn't like to be told what to do, and he REALLY doesn't like to be told no. If he can't get his way, he attempts to find a way to make it happen, even if it means doing something under-handed or something that's maybe not the smartest choice in the world. Stubborn and willful, it's sometimes extremely difficult for him to see someone else's side of things, though with some coaxing he will eventually cool down and let things go. While often angry in the moment, he doesn't seem the type to hold a grudge, carrying very little ill-will towards other people in town, even if they happened to punch him in the face that one time. Usually, he's just more concerned with making something work than having his revenge. Though cocky and brazen to those around him, as well as a massive flirt, there is a darker side to the doctor, too. He is heavily burdened by his past, aware that his name is likened to a monster. And, after all the failure in his life, he worries from time to time that he IS the monster people think him to be. That he'll never be seen as a man who just wanted to preserve life. He struggles with his past self, and more often than not his bravado is just a cover for a very broken, very uneasy man. HISTORY Before the curse on the Enchanted Forest was enacted, Victor Frankenstein was a bright, upcoming scientist in his land, working on a method that would restore life. However, his father never supported the wild ideals of his son, and wished him to make more of a meaningful existence as a doctor in the army. While Victor was disheartened that his father didn't understand, or even like, what he was attempting to accomplish, his brother Gerhardt was always there to offer encouragement and tell him to continue on with his dreams. As his father was the one funding his experiments, he almost had no choice but to pack up his life's work and heed the wishes of his father. Thankfully, though, a man named Rumplestiltskin appeared to make a deal with him. A deal that allowed him all the funding he needed to continue his resurrection experiments. In need of bodies for his experiments, Victor decided to raid the graveyard at night, digging up corpses to attempt to restore to life. His brother finds him there, disapproving of his methods, but both are forced to run when a groundskeeper opens fire on them. Much to the horror and shock of Victor, he discovered that his brother was shot during their escape. A wound that ends up claiming his life. Desperate to save his brother, he makes him the newest experiment, attempting to bring him back to life. Unfortunately, his heart was unable to survive the procedure, rendering the whole experiment a failure. Heartbroken, Victor attempted to explain what happened to his father, but his father ended up so disgusted by the whole affair that he proclaimed he lost both his sons that day. Still desperate for a means to bring his brother back to life, Victor made another deal with Rumplestiltskin, this one for a heart strong enough to withstand the procedure in exchange for readying one his pupils, Regina, for learning dark magic. Victor told Regina that he could revive lost love, but intentionally failed the experiment so he was not restored and Regina's hope was broken. This satisfied the agreement between him and Rumple, and he was allowed to return to his land with a magic heart. Using the heart, Victor finally managed to complete his experiment, bringing his brother back to life. Unfortunately, Gerhardt was not the man he once was, seemingly dim-witted and racked with pain. Victor, too pleased with his success to care, shows Gerhardt to their father. Their father, rather unsurprisingly, was shocked and horrified by the sight of his undead son, and attacked Victor in a fit of rage. Angered by the attack, Gerhardt grabs his father, beating him to death while Victor did nothing more than watched. Afterwards, Victor locked his brother away in a tower, too attached to him to end his clear suffering. After the curse, Victor was re-imagined as the head doctor of the Storybrooke hospital- a man named Dr. Whale. He spent most of his time tending to the people of Storybrook, making sure they walked out of his hospital in better shape than they walked in. When not at his office, Victor spent a lot of his time just enjoying the town life, mostly in the form of flirting with the locals. There was a moment where he even managed to have a fling with Snow White, though that was when they had no memory of who they really were. For the most part, however, Dr. Whale's attempts at flirting are often rebuffed by the ladies of Storybrooke, and he is generally considered a bit of a douchebag. A douchebag capable of saving lives. When the curse was broken, and their memories restored, Dr. Whale was extremely pissed off about his situation, riling up an angry mob and marching them to Regina's home in an attempt to deal with her lynch-style. Though the attempt proved unsuccessful, Dr. Whale remained bitter towards Regina, and even the other members of Storybrooke, for some time. He, unlike most of the inhabitants, was not from the Enchanted Forest, and had actually come from a place known as the Land Without Color. While trying to deal with being stuck away from his home, further away than the others, to him, he came across the knowledge that the Enchanted Forest hadn't been destroyed when they were all pulled to Storybrooke, suggesting that his own world might have survived as well. He went to Regina to ask if she would help send him back to his own home, but she refused. Rather foolishly, he thought that helping her might get her to change her mind, and decided to steal the body of her long-dead boyfriend Daniel in an attempt to bring him back to life. He succeeded, but what was revived proved far more than simply Daniel. It was a monster, addled by pain and limited comprehension of the world it had been brought into. In a blind rage, Daniel attacked Dr. Whale, ripping off his arm and leaving him to bleed to death in utter agony on the floor. Luckily, Whale managed to slow the blood loss long enough for help to come and patch him up. After the whole mess, Whale went to Rumple, who restored his arm for him after he admitted that he needed magic and not science. He struggle with his past only got worse from there. Knowing who he was, what he had done, and what he still needed to do made the poor man emotionally unstable. He resorted to downing his misery in alcohol, but that proved an ineffective method when he ended up needing to save someone's life while still sort of smashed. Doubting himself and his ability to be of any use at that point, the shattered Whale made for the docks where he sought to end his own life. Were it not for a monster-to-monster chat with Ruby, he would not have been there to go back and save the injured man's life. Though still conflicted about his past, and where it might lead his future, Whale decided to continue working as the town doctor, helping those in need whenever possible. He decided it was the best way to ensure that no one thought of the just the monster when they heard the name Frankenstein. RP SAMPLE Victor was in his laboratory, working on his experiments as usual. He needed to find a way to revive his brother- there had to be some way to save him. He knew he had to work more quickly, too. Though he had the brain preserved, the rest of the body was starting to decompose. He had to keep finding new parts to replace dying and improper portions of flesh. And that came with its own complications. Like finding parts suitable as replacements. They had to be somewhat fresh, at least, and the right size, color and shape to match what was left of his brother. Or match as closely as possible, anyway. He couldn't be terribly picky. But as long as he revived his brother, he didn't care what he looked like. These parts didn't come for free, and though he had money for his experiments, thanks to a deal he had made in the past, he knew his reputation had become strained within the scientific community. No one would sell to him. In any case, there wasn't the supply to go with his demand, anyway. It meant having to go the graveyard and gather parts for himself, which only made matters even worse. Everyone in town whispered about him. His father refused to acknowledge he was even alive. It was only a matter of time before someone stormed the castle, so to speak. But he didn't care. He didn't care about his reputation or what his father thought, or if he ended up in prison. He only cared about his brother. A small monitor next to him in the lab flickered to life when someone approached the castle door, alerting him to his visitor. He looked at the woman through the screen, tilting his head slightly to one side. She didn't look entirely friendly, but he supposed it was probably time to face some of his demons. He sighed, moving away from the surgery table his brother remained covered on, leaving his lab and ascending a staircase back to the main portion of the mansion. He wandered the somewhat long distance from his lab to the front door, opening it instead of having one of his servants do it for him. "Forgive the wait," he offered once the door was open, "I wasn't expecting company. I'm Victor Frankenstein- to what do I owe this immense pleasure, my dear?" He watched her, taking her appearance in silently. She definitely looked like someone who wasn't there for a social call. An assassin, perhaps? Or something else? |
