Rumplestiltskin
Mr. Gold
PERSONALITY Before his powers, Rumple was a normal, albeit crippled, man living a normal life. He was kind and friendly, though never one to stand out in a crowd. After fleeing from the Ogre Wars, his cowardice became apparent, and the whole town turned on him. He became meek and quiet, shuffling around in life just to get from day to day. He was always afraid of what might happen to him, or what might happen to Bae. His cowardice made him a laughing stock, much to his furthered dismay. He had no confidence in himself and no hope for a brighter future. As the Dark One, Rumple was a seemingly confident, conniving schemer always looking to make a deal with unsuspecting, and not-so-unsuspecting people. He cared little of what people thought of him, and was not afraid to do whatever was needed to get to his goal, whatever that might be at the time. When it came to making deals, Rumple always had some kind of master plan, and he never made a deal where he wouldn't profit from it in the end. He lured people into agreeing to his terms, offering them the things they thought they wanted/needed at the time. Of course, he was always happy to warn them that all magic came with a price, but that never seemed to be enough to get them to change their minds. Strange how it always seemed to work out for him. Usually, a deal with Rumple never worked out the way it appeared it would. Nothing is linear with him, hence his reputation as the sort of being you don't want to mess with. A reputation he was happy to have, as it made him seem all the more powerful and mysterious. Those who are desperate will turn to whatever means they can find in order to get what they want, something Rumple understood extremely well. He had no problem with killing those who stood in his way, and felt no guilt. Through his smiles is a ruthless killer, cold and unforgiving, especially to those who hurt him while he was a human. He held onto grudges and didn't let go, often lashing out again and again at old scars. In Misthaven, Rumple is flippant and a bit exuberant, almost flowery with his actions. It seems he's always having a good time, and there's rarely a moment where he doesn't have a smile on his face. In Storybrooke, that bouncy attitude is replaced with a more refined, logical demeanor, but his confidence remained. Nothing seemed to rattle him, and nothing got in his way. At least, that's the way he made it appear. Rumple wasn't all laughter and mischief, and there were moments where his former human shined through. In Storybrooke, particularly, he struggled with his human emotions from time to time. He is afraid of losing his power, which is why he goes through such lengths to gather items and information that might prove harmful to him in the future. His cowardice lingers under all of his actions, no matter how confident he might appear on the outside. The one who brought out what little good there might be in him was Belle. She prompted him to act against his own wishes, doing things to help when normally he would only offer his services if it proved a benefit to him. She said she can see the good in him, though he can't see it himself. He is very much in love with her, but terrified that she will discover he has no goodness inside of him. He is convinced that no one could possible love him the way he was, and he was afraid of opening his heart fully to someone else. He always held back, even from Belle. His love for her and his fears were always in constant battle, making it difficult for him to make the right choices. Still, when he's with her, there's no denying that something about him shifts. Brightens, perhaps. HISTORY Rumple's history is long and involved. He, being the Dark One, has been blessed with immortality, extending his life well beyond the limits of a normal human being. Well beyond limits themselves, in fact. But he wasn't always the Dark One, and his journal to get there was no easy undertaking. He grew up the son of a con-artist named Malcolm. He gets a job as a spinster while still young, and finds he really enjoys it. When his not-so-great father makes a deal to live in Neverland as Peter Pan and sends his son to Misthaven, Rumple is raised by the same spinsters who gave him a job in the first place. But they are kind people, and he is not left in an unhappy life. As an adult, Rumple marrys a woman named Milah and is called to fight in the Ogre Wars. Though his pregnant wife is worried about what might happen to him, he is convinced he needs to go to prove he is not a coward like his father. However, when he gets to the front lines, he meets a seer who tells him horrible things, prompting him to cripple himself and run away from the battle without ever seeing the ogres. He gets to go home and meet his baby son, Baelfire, but his wife has already heard the rumor of his cowardice and is ashamed of him. So much so that she grows distant over the years, getting drunk and mingling with pirates. She falls in love with one named Hook, and though Rumple attempts to get her back, he is too afraid to fight with him and ultimately has to go home without her. He raises Baelfire on his own, but when Baelfire nears fourteen, he begins to fear that his son is to be carted off to the Ogre War, where he will be killed. So he attempted to run away with Bae,who finds out about how much of a coward his father really is. Taken in by a kind man named Zoso, Rumple is told of a dagger that will give him the power he needs to be brave. He breaks into the Duke's castle, where the dagger was being held, and steals it. After killing the Dark One before him, Zoso himself, he absorbs the Dark One's powers and becomes an extremely powerful monster. With his new powers, he saves Bae from being taken to the war and saves the other children from having to face battle. As the years go on, Rumple grows more and more fond of his Dark One powers, much to the protest of his son. Bae searches for a way to get rid of his father's magic, while Rumple continues to embrace it, making deals and killing those who stand in his way. Eventually, Bae gets a bean that will take the both of them to a land without magic, but when the portal opens, Rumple lets Bae fall into it without going in himself, in order to keep his magic. He immediately regrets this, and searches for a way to get Bae back. When he learns that the only way to get to the land without magic is through a curse, he vows to see the curse enacted. Everything he does, every deal he makes, is to further his plans to get back to Bae from that moment on. He makes several deals with all the various people of Misthaven, as well as several not-so-local people, to gather everything he thinks he might need in his quest to get back his son. He also gathers all manner of magical object, always seeking power though he already had so much of it. As his time goes on, he reunites with Hook and Milah, killing his former wife and cutting the hand off the troublesome pirate in the name of revenge. More or less everyone in Misthaven ends up making some kind of deal with Rumplestiltskin, with varying degrees of success in the end. He preps Regina for her role in the curse, and sets the stage for every contingency. After gaining the ability to see the future, at least to a degree, he is able to figure out just what deal he needed to make and where. Not to mention when, for that matter. As he continued to make deals with all the various people of the many kingdoms, gaining a reputation for those looking for a magic fix to their problems, he comes across a kingdom caught in the middle of the Ogre Wars. He offers to help them in the war if he is given Belle, to use as a maid. She accepts the deal on the behalf of her father and he takes her back to his castle so she can clean and do his bidding. They grow fond of each other as their time together lengthens, and Rumple starts to feel things he hadn't allowed himself to feel in a long time. However, he knows no one can ever love a beast like him, and is constantly haunted by the idea of her betraying him. When it seems that moment finally arrived, he reacts strongly, banishing her from his home. But his love for her never really fades, and he keeps a cup she chipped as his most prized possession. Alone again, Rumple goes back to his mission, even while trapped in a magic-proof cell where he can't do anyone further harm, and eventually, Regina does indeed cast the curse he had been waiting his extended life for. When everyone is sent to the land without magic, he is carried along with them, though he retains his memories of his former life where everyone else has lost them. His mission to reunite with his son was far from over, though part one of his ultimate goal was indeed achieved. Running a pawn shop in the land without magic, Rumple - now Mr. Gold - continued his deal-making and preparing. When he learns Belle is still alive, having been told she had died in the past, he eagerly seeks to reunite with her. When around her, the better side of him becomes somewhat more apparent, and it's clear she has some kind of a pull over him. However, his lust for magic and power is as strong and ever, making it a trial for the both of them to be in love while he is also the Dark One. Eventually, his efforts prove worthwhile, and he reunited with his long lost, now grown son, though it is hardly the happy reunion he wanted it to be. He ended up poisoned and close to dying, and though he managed to save himself, his life continued to prove a chaotic mess suitable for villains. Whether it was Belle losing her memories, Neal apparently dying or a vision about killing Henry himself, there was always something to drive him back to his powers of the Dark One. When Henry ended up captured by Pan, Rumple decided to go to Neverland to save him and prove himself. In the end, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his loved ones, killing himself and his wicked father to keep the man from destroying Storybrooke. He would have been fine with things ending for him there, but they didn't. He was revived, at the loss of his son, and kept as a slave by Zelena. Even though he was eventually freed and managed to kill her, at least to his belief anyway, it didn't bring back his son and it didn't make up for what had happened. Though he vowed to be the man Bae had wanted him to be, he soon ended up breaking his promise with his dead son. A new problem had presented itself- his heart being tainted by all the darkness he had used. It was slowly killing him, prompting him to make more poor choices as his self preservation habit kicked in again. It cost him Belle's trust and got him kicked out of Storybrooke, forcing him to team up with other villains to find the Author. And find him he did, the man re-writing their histories so Rumple could live as a hero. However, it was short-lived. Soon enough, that spell was broken too, and Rumple was left dying on the floor from his blackened heart. The last he remembered was the darkness threatening to break free, and Belle being with him for support. When he woke up again, he was captured by a dark Emma and was told he needed to become a hero so she could pull Excalibur from its resting place. An impossible task for him, he imagined. He trained with Merida, but it was only when he needed to save Belle that his true colors shone at last. He was capable of pulling the sword from the stone, proving his heart was pure. Eventually, he managed to trick Emma and Hook and regain the powers of the Dark One, using them to save the whole crew from the Underworld. Now he has not only his old powers, but the added power of every Dark One that came before him. It is unclear how he plans on using his powers. RP SAMPLE Standing behind the counter of his shop, Rumple attempted to keep himself busy by going through his inventory. He had to wonder if he had anything of use, even if he wouldn't be the one jumping to use magical items. Those days were behind him, and he no longer had any interest in making himself as powerful as he could be. But there were others who needed their powers kept in check, so perhaps he could find something to help. The heroes probably weren't keen on trusting him after everything that had happened, but that didn't mean he was going to give up and do nothing. He could still be useful.... he had to be. He bent behind the counter to grab one of the large log books hiding beneath it, his ears picking up on the sound of someone entering his shop. He, however, was too interested in his own duties to really care who had ventured in. He would deal with them in a moment. That is, until they spoke. That single word sent a bolt of emotion right through the man's heart, Rumple jerking his head back to pull himself upright. He ended up slamming the back of his head on the underside of the counter with a loud thunk, the man yelping in pain as he straightened up more carefully the second time. Hand on his head, he looked over the desk, eyes widening at the sight of his son. "... Bae?" He said. Almost instantly, tears filled the emotional man's eyes. He had always been known as a bit of a cry baby, even with the powers of the Dark One. He had never been shy about showing his emotions, and now was no different. He quickly limped around the counter, taking his cane from its resting spot as he moved. "Bae!" Was all he could really say as he rushed for his son, throwing his arms around the man. If it was some kind of cruel trick from Hook, he would have to kill the man. Seeing his son was probably one of things he wanted most in the whole of the universe. |
