Katrina Van Tassel
Katrina Van Tassel
PERSONALITY Kat can best be described as awkward. She can be a bit overtalkative, and overshare especially if she’s nervous. Kat is a bit odd, and she’s accepted that fact about herself, she was never going to completely fit in with the normal crowd, mostly because her interests are odd and she likes to go off on tangents. She’s not completely versed on the workings of the Land Without Magic and she does get confused by a lot of its technology and terminology, which only seems to add to her strangeness. Katrina is a very smart and clever young woman. Her mind is constantly turning and coming up with new ideas. She’s someone that loves learning and would have spent her entire life in a classroom as a student. Kat is never without one of her books, though now the books are usually some sort of grimoire or spell book. Kat is known to get a bit obsessive over things she finds interesting. Mostly her interests revolve around magic, the supernatural, and science. Kat can get very excited if one of her interests finally gets mentioned, especially if she as the opportunity to learn something knew about them. Kat is very adventurous and despite being book smart she tends to go too far. Often times she forgets the danger when she’s finally solved a puzzle or a riddle. Sometimes her forgetfulness stems from the fact that she has magic and she’s gotten a bit arrogant about it since she believes she can completely do everything on her own, because in the past that’s always worked for her. Kat has potential for darkness and has a desire for power. Most people would be horrified witnessing some of the things she’s seen, or doing some of the dark deeds she’s done, but she’s found she’s more afraid of the fact she’s not horrified but things she’s done, she’s enjoyed doing it. Kat tries to push aside some of these darker impulses but it’s quite difficult for her, especially when she feels bullied or wronged. She’s much more sneaky about her wicked deeds, as she’s a horrible liar and really doesn’t enjoy doing it. HISTORY Katrina Van Tassel was born in the quiet town of Sleepy Hollow. Her father was the richest man in town, a prominent businessman and politician. He was not a kind man, he had a violent temper and detested anything that didn’t fit his definition of normal. His wife, however, Katherine Van Tassel had a dark secret, she was a witch. Not only was magic outlawed in Sleepy Hollow, but anybody possessing magic was to be put on trial and then killed immediately after they were found guilty. From a young age, Kat witnessed several witch hunts and saw women and men being burnt for possessing magic, even if only a small amount. Kat was afraid for herself and her mother, since from the time she was very small she was able to perform magic. Her mother always managed to hide the truth from her father and any other prying eyes, but Kat had a difficult time concealing her powers. When she was 10, her magic went a bit haywire when she was out at some shops with her mother. Several shops caught on fire, and immediately her mother was blamed. Katherine was put on trial and found guilty, the only reason Kat was spared was because of who her father was. And he testified against his wife. Kat fled into the forest the night her mother was burnt at the stake. She didn’t know whether it was her magic or her mother’s magic since they were saying the same spell at the same time, but she summoned a protective spirit. The being was known as the Headless Horsemen, a creature that had terrorized the town for centuries. But he protected Kat from anyone that would harm her. Soon, any that caught her doing magic, or threatened her would find themselves taken by the Headless Horsemen, sometimes even killed. Kat hated it when he killed someone, and tried to forbid him from doing so, but it never worked. The only thing that seemed to control him was the Jack-O-Lantern that appeared when he was summoned. Her father held the long standing suspicion that Kat possessed magic like her mother and he was going to prove it. Her father pretended to be attacked forcing Kat to use her powers, openly. In an instant she knew she had been tricked. Kat was to be burnt alive without a trial. But something different happened when Kat was tied to the stake, the second the fire ignited she willed it to consume the town that were trying to kill her. The flames engulfed most of Sleepy Hollow. Kat managed to untangle herself from the ropes and rode off with the Headless Horsemen. She was horrified after using her powers in such a manner, but a small part of her enjoyed it. Unable to admit to herself that she was the cause of the flames, she sent the Headless Horseman away. Kat was taken in by a local coven of witches many towns away. The Headless Horseman would never be too far from her, always watching and waiting. She spent the next few years learning magic and how to control her powers better. She was still forced to hide her abilities but now she had better mastery over her powers; fire manipulation, ritual magic, spells, potions, necromancy and limited telekinesis. As always, most higher level magic required the aid of her coven and she was always magically much stronger when involved with a Coven. Kat wasn’t content to sit in a dark room for the rest of her life, so when she was 18 she managed to start school. Here she met Ichabod Crane, a mysterious professor. While she was smitten with Ichabod a man by the name of Brom Bones took over her Coven, by killing the Coven leader. Since he became the “High Witch” of the Coven, he claimed Kat as his and she was forced into an engagement with him. Kat felt trapped, unable to magically overpower her fiancé or escape him. Nowhere was safe, she was sure he would always be able to find her. Her relationship with Ichabod grew, he told her of other realms where magic could be used freely, and even magic users were loved. All the pair needed to be free was a magic bean and Mr. Crane just happened to have one. Kat was unwilling to go without her Coven members. Unfortunately, Brom figured out their scheme and when Kat arrived at the Coven home all the other Coven members and Ichabod were dead. Brom had killed them all. Kat managed to escape Brom and went back to find the Jack-O-Lantern that could be used to bring forth the Headless Horseman. She promised to free the Horseman if he brought her Brom’s head. Within 13 hours the Horseman brought her Brom’s head and Kat then released the Headless Horseman from his prison and cursed Brom to become the new Headless Horseman, her slave forever. Kat spent years attempting to find a way to get to the Underworld to rescue Ichabod and her Coven. Kat used the magic bean that traversed her to another realm, but she was never able to find a way to bring back Ichabod. Eventually, her quest would bring her to a town called Storybrooke. Somewhere along the way the Jack-O-Lantern was stolen, and she believes it is somewhere in Storybrooke. RP SAMPLE Kat had been hiding since she had entered Storybrooke. Immediately, she knew that her clothing was going to cause her problems. She felt bad about stealing the clothes from a clothing line, but it was a necessary evil. After all, she didn’t know how this world reacted to magic. The last thing she needed was someone attempting to burn her at the stake, again. She peered over several garbage cans, well, she wasn’t completely sure what the big metal tins were, other than the fact that they smelt awful. Mr. Gold Pawnbroker & Antiquities Dealer it hadn’t taken her that long to figure out that her Jack-O-Lantern was probably in that shop. From what she had heard from others, that’s were many things were. Kat couldn’t have that magical item in the wrong hands. Who knew what would happen if the wrong person attempted to use the Jack-O-Lantern without a working knowledge. The person could even turn themselves into the new Headless Horsemen and Kat wasn’t ready to release her former fiancé yet. Kat’s eyes scanned across the street to see several people were staring back at her. She realized she must look insane. She popped up with beet red cheeks from her hiding place. As nonchalantly as possible she started to walk away, accidentally bumping into someone. It appeared the people across the street weren’t the only ones to notice her staring into the shop window. ”I was only looking!” she confessed nervously. |
