Rumple looked at him a moment, before his expression softened quite a bit. He closed his eyes for a moment, thinking about all those painful years when he had been without his son. "Of course," he said faintly, "every year. I did have candles, and I wouldn't do anything on that day. No magic, because I knew you hated it. For at least one day a year, I always tried to be the man you had wanted me to be." He shook his head. It hardly mattered now.
Remembering his son on his birthday was only one of the things he had done to keep his son in his heart. Of course it had always been a very special day for him.
"You know... I can't remember my own birthday. I never celebrated it. But yours- yours I'll always remember."
He watched Neal for a moment, smiling weakly. This was everything he had wanted- being back together with his son. It had been a long, difficult road, but it had happened. when Neal had died, he had thought his whole world had lost all meaning. He had gone through a very dark period of his life because of it. He had allowed himself to become a horrible man.
But he should have known that Neal wouldn't stay away- that they would be reunited. He should never have given up hope.
Hope was reserved for heroes. It was always difficult for him to think that he deserved to hold onto any of it. He sighed softly, moving a hand to his face for a moment to wipe away a tear. He felt very heavy-hearted just thinking about his past with his son.
"There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't think about you, though. Not just on your birthday- every day I wondered about you. Wondered how you were doing."
