Jefferson/The Mad Hatter
Jefferson
PERSONALITY Jefferson is a tortured soul. He was cursed with knowledge, but no one will believe him, much like Cassandra of Greek mythology. He's been driven quite insane by his constant need, desire, his hunger to make his hat work so he can get back to his daughter. The only thing that keeps him going, keeps him from giving up on his eternal labor is his daughter, Grace. He's, well, mad. He is positively desperate to get back to his daughter and old life of being a father and having no worries except that for the welfare of his child and other fatherly responsibilities. Jefferson has an intense hatred of his powers, believing they've brought him and Grace nothing but trouble in his lifetime. Bad feelings and memories are triggered by any mention of Grace or his powers. Likes- Jefferson likes people who will believe him. No one has or probably ever will, but he always has hope that he'll find his way back to Grace. He likes fashion, fantasy literature (because he alone knows the truth of it), tea, cats (he thinks they're cute and relatable), ethereal-sounding music, gourmet food, and pull-n-peel twizzlers (they're really good, okay?). Dislikes- Jeff dislikes most people in general. He's not a social guy, really. Married to his work, you could say. Jeff dislikes matchmaking/dating apps (useless, really), greasy fast food, EDM (ugh, really), coffee (who on earth prefers this bitter drink to tea?), hipsters, and hard liquor. Strength- his daughter, perseverance, dedication, manipulation Weakness- his daughter, temper, madness HISTORY Jefferson is, well, to put it simply, mad. But how he got this way is actually very sad tale of woe and suffering. He's a dedicated father, and will do anything to get back to his daughter. Literally, anything. Regina brought him to Wonderland under her curse. Grace, known as Paige in Storybrooke, was taken from him when they were brought to Storybrooke under the Evil Queen's curse. Many years ago, Jefferson was born to lowly civilians: a tavern wench and a bastard son of a lord. He never knew his father or mother, only coming to know about them when he was older. He grew up on the streets, a beggar at first, but then a thief. He found the hat when he was only a teenager, stealing it from a merchant and keeping it for the rest of his life. He made it work one dark and stormy night, and it made stealing things of value from other realms much easier. He took many odd jobs, such as one for Rumpelstiltskin involving one of his pupils, Regina, her dead lover Daniel, and an odd man named Victor Frankenstein. Jefferson's ability to travel between realms made it possible to bring Victor, who was famous for being an esteemed doctor and scientist, to the Enchanted Forest to revive Daniel from the dead. It doesn't work and Victor is taken back to his homeland of the Land without Color and Jefferson is paid handsomely. Continuing his thieving, he arrives in Camelot to steal the King's most treasured items, coming face-to-face with another thief who he finds out is named Priscilla. They escape and fall in love, eventually marrying and having Grace. Jefferson is determined to be a better father to Grace than his father ever was to him. In a fatal accident, Priscilla is killed, leaving Jefferson heartbroken. He resolves to stow away his hat forever and live as a lowly mushroom seller with Grace. They are happy in their life, but extremely poor. Regina approaches him with a deal in which he only has to make a simple trip and he will be compensated greatly. He adamantly refuses her deal. Jefferson feels like a failure as a father when he cannot afford to buy Grace a stuffed white rabbit, and thusly accepts Regina's offer. He and Regina travel to Wonderland, letting her know the rules of his hat: the same amount of people must return through the portal as the amount of people who went through. Regina then travels to the Queen of Hearts' castle, where she grabs a box from the Queen's personal stash. They make a run for it, where Regina reveals that her father is in the box. Jefferson realizes Regina never intended on traveling back to the Enchanted Forest, intending to leave him in Wonderland the whole time. Despite begging her to let him go because his daughter is back in the Enchanted Forest, Regina leaves him in Wonderland anyway, leaving him to the mercy of the Queen's guards. They arrest him, bringing him straight to the Queen. He states why he is there and the Queen orders the executioner to cut off his head, but to his surprise, he remains alive. He is allowed to stay in Wonderland at the Queen's castle for as long as he needs to in order to make his hat work so he can get back to Grace. He stays in Wonderland working tirelessly trying to make the hat work, driving himself mad. He only leaves Wonderland when Regina brings him to Storybrooke with her curse. He is stuck for 28 years in a mansion, forced to watch Grace, now Paige in Storybrooke, live happily with different parents, never approaching her because he didn't want to destroy her perfect, happy reality and submit her to the torture of holding conflicting realities in her head, like he has in his. Jefferson meets Emma Swan, who he believes can be the one to fix his hat because he believes her to have magic. She thinks him insane and fails to fix his hat because she doesn't believe and hasn't broken the curse yet. Jefferson ends up falling out of a window of his mansion but disappears from the spot where he should have fallen on the ground. Jefferson strikes a deal with Regina, helping her reach across time to get a poisoned apple with which to poison Emma. The plan backfires, as Henry, Regina's adopted son and Emma's biological son, consumes the poisoned apple and is put under a sleeping curse. Jefferson comes to Henry's hospital room to claim his reward since he'd technically fufilled his end of the deal. Regina has promised to erase his memories and create new lives for him and Grace. Regina staunchly refuses to complete her end of the deal because the apple poisoned Henry and not Emma. Pissed off because Regina screwed him over yet again, Jefferson exacts his revenge by freeing Belle from the asylum, sending her to Gold who gets mad for keeping her there without telling him. Jeff thinks this is the best way to take revenge on Regina. After the curse is broken by Emma giving Henry true love's kiss, Gold marks Regina for death, sending an unkillable creature after her. She traps it in another realm with Jefferson's hat, accidentally sending Mary Margaret, Snow White's Storybrooke coutnerpart, and Emma into the portal after it. David, Prince Charming's Storybrooke counterpart, seeks to get his wife and child back so he seeks out owner of the hat that made the portal. He finds Jefferson, who refuses to aid him. The curse broken, he still hasn't approached Grace because he feels guilty about leaving Grace in the first place to go to Wonderland, nervous she'll hold it against him and be mad at him. Henry talks him out of this assumption and Jefferson reunites with Grace. RP SAMPLE Please use a sample of the character you're applying for.
