Rumple frowned. "She found out," he replied, "I imagine she had always had her suspicions. But by the time she actually took action, it was too late for her to stop what was happening. Too late to stop the savior from breaking the curse." He remembered that moment quite well, mostly because he had hated it so much. She had been lording his most prized possession over him, teasing him with it until he admitted that he knew what his real name was. He could have allowed her to break or keep the chipped cup if he had really wanted to maintain his cover, but it had simply been too precious for him to risk destroying.
The dear little teacup that Belle had broken on accident. The one thing that always reminded him of his love for her.
His gaze shifted for a moment, resting on the teacup that was actually sitting on the table not too far from them. He always kept it close to him these days. After finding all the pieces and once again restoring it from a broken state, it was something he really wanted to keep safe for as long as possible. There would be no breaking it for a third time. When she asked him about his father, he frowned. "I don't know," he said, "he was just a wicked man. He wanted Henry's heart for his own immortality, and he didn't care about anyone other than himself." When she asked about his own sacrifice, he sighed, closing his eyes for a moment as he reflected on the moment. "It wasn't hard," he said at length, "not when I was finally doing it. I felt like it was the right thing to do, and I wasn't frightened. I felt... that I really could save my family and the people I loved, so I didn't really have a second thought on it."
As she attempted to once again comfort him, Rumple looked at the woman. This wasn't the woman he had killed on the docks. If anything, she reminded him more of the woman he had known before the Ogre Wars. The one that hadn't been cruel to him. That hadn't stayed out late getting hopelessly drunk with other men drooling all over her. The one that hadn't treated her family like an afterthought.
The one he had missed for so long.
"Seeing Bae die was the worst moment of my life," Rumple replied, "I don't think there's anything that would compare. Even going back to the Underworld and suffering for my sins all over again would be better than seeing that boy die. I will not out-live him a second time, I'm going to make sure of that." He would do everything in his power to protect his son, that was for sure. And with Neal holding his dagger, he knew he was actually being protected, too. Neal would make sure he didn't make any of the same mistakes as before. He wouldn't end up doing something dark that might hurt the people he loved. That was the plan, anyway. But he knew he was a difficult man to keep under control. If he did start to stray.. he hoped his son would know what to do.
In the meantime, he supposed he could focus on his former wife. He frowned, watching her from his seat next to the spinning wheel.
"What do you plan on doing now, Milah?" He asked, "this world must be entirely strange to you. Where are you going to live? What are you going to do while you're here? If you like, I can get you set up with a room at Granny's Bed and Breakfast. I own the building, so I imagine they will be accommodating if I ask them to be."
Milah
