"Swim away, you pathetic fish. That's all you can do, isn't it? Swim away from all of your issues. But know that we'll keep you away from what you truly want."
The prates were nothing but ignorant and demeaning to Darla. She was at least thankful that she was able to take walks by herself at times. It was nice being able to clear her head from all of the toxicity from being in the pirate ship for days at a time. The Enchanted Forest was a place she didn't enjoy being, but it was better than some of the places they had been to before.
It kept echoing to her in her mind the words she had heard spoken to her. Not just the hundreds of insults used by the pirates, but that she'd only be able to become a mermaid again by true love's kiss. Love was a foreign emotion to Darla. She had loved her pod so much when she was the queen of it. In fact, she felt as if she still loved her pod. It just had been so long since she was able to see them.
And honestly, it had been a while since Darla had been able to go for a pleasant swim. Taking baths with Casper didn't necessarily make her feel happy at all. But as Darla pondered at the thought of going for a swim, she spotted an almost solid red river. Her first thought was that the river was filled with blood, but the water wasn't nearly the same color as what blood would look like if it filled the water.
Instead, the water had a slight glow to it. She wondered why it looked so...mystifying. But Darla wanted to swim. It was almost like the water was drawing her to it. The entire essence of the water was almost intoxicating. She had to at least feel the water against her bare skin, so she stripped naked and placed her feet in the water, inching further and further in until her entire body was covered by the pigmented water.
It was very calming. Even though Darla didn't have her tail, she still was able to swim with ease. She didn't want to have to think about Firebeard. Or her pod, or even her future. This exact moment would have to last as long as possible. She didn't want to leave the position that she was in, until a man suddenly appeared.
Darla was too far out into the water to quickly leave, so she hoped that the man did not see her swimming in the red river. She was still so calm. However, she made an accidental splashing noise. If the man wasn't looking before, he was surely looking now.
"There's nothing to look at," Darla began, staring at the man, "I was, um, just getting out."
